LYLE, A LIVING LEGACY & WHY I NEVER PLAN TO OWN A STUDIO

LYLE | ONE

I get asked all the time, do you have a studio & will you get one down the road? As far as I can see into the future, my answer is no to all the above. Do not get me wrong, there are many talented photographers who specialize in studio work & do an awesome job with it – it’s just simply not for me & that’s o.k.a.y. The beautiful thing about photography is, there are so many options to choose what best fits YOU. For me, sessions like this one remind me why I am completely an on-location /natural light photographer and never plan to own a studio. I have said for years, I want to interact with my clients out side of four walls, working with gorgeous light from the natural sun, and venture to a location that is meaningful to them.

Emily, Lyle’s mom, contacted me a while ago to set up his one year session & mentioned she would like to go to her Aunt’s property. Upon arriving, I was a few minutes early so I had some time to strike up conversation with Emily’s aunt. She shared with me that Emily actually lived on this property, but lost her father, Lyle, at a young age. I loved hearing her share some precious details about the property and family history. Obviously, that is where little man got his name & so Lyle lives on.

It was misting at the beginning of the session so we headed up to the porch to begin with & I remember Emily’s aunt saying, “My brother, Emily’s dad, planted those trees, which were now in our background of the pictures. How neat? Then, Emily pulled out a tractor from her vehicle, which use to be her father’s & even her aunt had pictures with it herself when she was a child. Towards the end of the session, Emily took me over to the cement steps & showed me where both her dad’s foot print & her’s were. I think Emily said she was between 2-3 when she placed her foot there. We tried our best to clean it off & get a picture of (little) Lyle with his grandpa Lyle’s footprint. SO SO awesome!! Further down the steps was Lyle’s name, which showed up very well for us. Emily asked for one more request that we go across the street to the property she now owns where they are building their home. She explained to me her share of land that would have been her father’s is now where they will reside. I just loved the family history & details of this session, it seriously is PRICELESS!

This is why I choose to go on-location & why I am willing to venture to people’s properties. This story would have been missed if I brought them inside my four walls & I can’t miss these details. They are too precious. Too meaningful. I’m so thankful they shared with me a part of their story for me to document. Lyle is named after his grandpa Lyle & I’m honored to have documented this milestone in his life on his grandpa’s property.
